Presentation of the Body and Matter exhibition
Body and Matter is a solo exhibition by Montreal photographer Claude Gauthier, dedicated to the artistic photography of the body and the exploration of materiality. Through a series of studio photographs, the artist offers a visual reflection on the relationship between the human body, texture, and surface.
In this fine art photography approach, the body becomes a territory of expression where light and matter engage in close dialogue. The images reveal sculptural forms where skin, textures, and surrounding elements merge, creating a tension between physical presence and abstraction.
Through a minimalist approach characteristic of artistic portrait photography, Claude Gauthier uses light to sculpt the body and reveal its nuances. Each work highlights the tactile dimension of the image, reinforcing the link between photography, sculpture, and painting.
The works presented in Body and Matter evoke both the fragility of existence and the evocative power of matter. They invite the viewer into a space of contemplation where identity, memory, and perception of the body converge.
Artistic approach
The artistic approach of Montreal photographer Claude Gauthier lies at the intersection of fine art photography and a sculptural approach to the body. Through his fine art photography practice, the human body is not merely a subject, but becomes a surface of transformation, revealed through light, texture, and composition.
By fragmenting, layering, and manipulating visual materials, Claude Gauthier expands the perception of the body beyond its anatomical form. His images explore a sensory dimension where photography engages in dialogue with sculpture and painting, creating works with a strong tactile and visual presence.
Each photograph creates a tension between the embodied presence of the body and its gradual dissolution into matter. Through a masterful use of light and textures, the artist develops a visual language specific to contemporary artistic portrait photography.
This approach invites the viewer to question the boundaries between skin and matter, flesh and texture, individual identity and the universal dimension of the body. It situates Claude Gauthier's work within an in-depth exploration of the representation of the body in artistic photography.
